Using Technology to help teach about Mysteries and Geography

About a week ago a grade 4 teacher popped into my room asking about mystery games, lesson or activities online to help his students learn geography.  The first thing that came to mind for me was Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago; not the TV show either.  When I mentioned this to him he starred blankly for a few moments then recalled what this was and was eager to see if we could find it online or at least find something similar.

I started searching and initially found little that would be helpful, he departed and I continued my search after about 20 minutes of searching and rewording my searches I found the following sites and actives to help inspire him!

I did find an online version of the Classic Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago Game! This one is the SNES version.

In addition I also found a set of logic puzzles inspired by this classic geography game.

Another game I found is called Personal Mystery in this game the player has to help unravel some mysteries, this is the least educational game I found.  This one is more of fun game, where the player searches for hidden items in the game.

The BBC has pretty good one called Digger and the Gang! In this gave the player has to explore different countries/historically important sites to learn/solve the mystery.

The National Gallery of Canada also has a fun/educational Mystery Game that involves famous works of art!  This games gets students/players to look carefully at the works of art to discover items in them (something that is the same for all the painting in the set) that they might not have noticed.

Another item I found for Mystery was a unit called:Who Duunit? You Dunnit! This unit has tons of great resources for teaching a well planned Mystery Unit.

The final item of use in this search that I found was from the ever helpful Read Write Think website! This lesson plan is called the Mystery Cube. It utilizes something it calls the Cube Creator.  It has a helpful planning pdf as well as a pod cast about Dynamic Detectives.
